Commissions

3 min read
update:
Commissions are closed

I guess I'll give this a try and leave commissions open for anyone who is interested.

Works are made and shipped to order. If you are interested or have any questions, you may email me (or just send me a note) to ask about or discuss the nature of the order: color, size, paper choice, pricing, etc. Payments of the agreed upon quoted price are done through Paypal.

Things to keep in mind:

How much does it cost?
This varies by difficulty and complexity of the project. Commissions are typically charged per hour with paper and shipping costs factored in. Since I'm fairly new to this, the rate is about $12 per hour.

How much of it do I get to customize?
Paper (choice/color): Certain papers tend to work better for certain models. I can provide suggestions or you could also choose a paper type(and that it's possible to fold with said paper). Also depends on what I have available and what my local paper store provides.
Size: For a given paper choice, there's usually an ideal size I like to use and I'm willing to size up or down ~50%. However, we can discuss what's best for your needs.
Details: Pretty much limited to what you see in the gallery. I might be able to slightly alter poses or small details for specific models and only to a certain degree.

How long does it take?
Depending on my schedule and the order, I expect to be able to finish and ship out most pieces within a week and a half from start(so far I'm assuming I won't have more than two commissioners at a time). However, I'll probably be more accurate if you message me.

Do you take original design commissions?
Depends on what it is and if I can figure it out. However, you are certainly welcome to ask if you have an idea in mind. If it's interesting enough to design, I might even add it to the list.

What models can I choose from?
As much of my gallery are prototype pieces, there are only a selection of models that I feel are of the quality that I would be comfortable selling. I currently am only willing to sell my own designs; I avoid selling other people's designs out of respect for other origami artists. However, if you received explicit permission from the designer and I have the ability to fold it, then I can make an exception. Also, if I didn't include something on the list, still feel free to ask about it (it's probably due to some minor tweaks I still need to work in).

Designs available for commission:
Fire Wyvern (wire stand not included)
USS Enterprise
Card Suits
Everything You Would Ever Need
Sword, Shield, and Scabbard
Draconequus (wire stand not included)

I will also be updating this journal entry over time.

Would people be interested in origami commissions? The idea is that a buyer and I would discuss the nature order, and I would fold and ship that model upon purchase.

However, there are a couple issues I could think of with this idea.

The first is related to the nature of the art; at the core, what you're getting is a sheet of paper folded into a specific shape. However, the folding process itself is fairly technical and for most pieces, take a fair amount of time to complete. I'd imagine the primary factor determining pricing be determined by cost of labor per hour to make the model (secondary is paper price). As a result, complicated models that take a while may become fairly pricey (something like a $80+ for a fire wyvern). I'd expect this would be surprising to the casual buyer.

The second issue is mostly a self imposed one: there are only a selection of models that I feel are of the quality that I would be comfortable selling. If there is interest, I will compile a list. Otherwise for the time being, I'm pretty much just thinking out loud. Out of respect for other origami artists, I would not be willing to fold other people's designs for sale, unless I had permission to do so (as well as the know-how).

I figure with the two restrictions mentioned above, this probably would be of interest to very few people. However, if you have read this far, please chime in with your thoughts or opinions =). Comments are appreciated, whether they be about the nature of the commission or the terms listed above. Again, this is just an idea I've been turning around in my head!

Origamipalooza

1 min read
Holy butts, it's been a while since my last journal entry.

Anyways, so this is going on this weekend: japancentersf.com/events/origa… , an event called origamipalooza held in San Francisco Japan Town. It's supposed to showcase and spread the art of origami. I'm not sure what exactly the event will entail, but there will be origami contests and booths with instructors teaching origami. If any of you have a free Saturday (this Saturday 8/10, 1pm-5pm) and happen to be in the SF area, come check it out! I'll be at one of the stations teaching the Yoshizawa Butterfly and a bird base dragon: easy but cool models to fold.

Don't mind me

Just uploading some previous projects I had put on Tumblr. I figured some of this stuff was easier to view in a gallery. However, it's mostly scrap stuff.
