Description

Designed and folded from a ~13" square Nicholas Terry tissue foil

I loved the sleek design of the USS Enterprise in the J.J. Abrams series of Star Trek films and felt I had to try my hand at folding the enterprise. Though the starship Enterprise is far from an original origami subject, those models seemed to be based more on the original series design of the ship. Instead, I decided to design my own with the details the way I wanted them: more curved surfaces on the model, a rounder saucer section, and proportions closer to the alternate reality USS Enterprise.

Structural-wise, it's a somewhat uncomplicated box pleated pattern built on a 16x16 grid. I found that building the saucer section by radially spreading the pleats gave a reliable method of making a clean, circular shape though the locking mechanism could be stronger. I ensured a lot of paper went to the nacelles, since they are quite long. The black base is a separate entity, folded from a smaller square of black canson.
